Last week, the Caravanserai team were invited to an exclusive Airbnb event where we met hosts from around the world who shared their unique hospitality tips.
Founded in 2008, Airbnb is the world’s largest trusted community marketplace for people to list, discover, and book unique accommodation around the world. Whether a flat for a night, or a castle for a week, Airbnb connects people to unique travel experiences in more than 34,000 cities and 190+ countries.
Although the Caravanserai and Airbnb may seem miles apart in sector, industry and scope, their goals remain similar – eradicating boundaries, creating a sense of belonging and promoting cross-cultural exchange.
As a melting pot and a place of exchange for ideas, culture and knowledge, the Caravanserai welcomed tips from Airbnb on how to welcome & host members of a community.
We heard from a panel of Airbnb hosts who shared their individual advice for welcoming guests from all over the world and making them feel at home.
Here are a few tips we picked up along the way for the Caravanserai:
1. Key is welcoming people into our communal space – making people feel at home to create a sense of belonging
2. Show people around the site – it is valuable to explain the originality and the effort that went into building the site
3. Exploring the neighbourhood in detail – if visitors have travelled from outside Canning Town, telling the history of the neighbourhood and what it has to offer
4. Guidelines & rules – learning how to respect communal space; to treat the site as if it were one’s home
Created by and made for the community, both Airbnb and the Caravanserai have helped and continue to help dissolve cultural, financial, and social boundaries between global citizens. It is valuable to learn from each other and different projects with similar aims.
