Upon a recent trip to Germany, I couldn’t help but notice that Berliners have seemingly perfected the art of the temporary space. Whether in an act of defiance, activism or simply necessity, if a space is not being used productively, they claim it, set up camp, and make the most of it.
They are experts at re-using whatever materials are available and in a “waste not, want not” mentality, they ensure that everything is movable because eviction is often inevitably linked in with their claiming of space that is not ‘legally’ theirs.
Despite being temporary, all the places that I had the pleasure of visiting had a feeling of being part of the fabric of the city, and not just here today/gone tomorrow. Clearly, this multicultural city knows how to make use of limited edition time!
